What I’m Wearing …another case of Dress Layering, I can’t stop lately! here & here
* Black and white print shirt dress is by Alice and Trixie and I think I got it at GILT
* Coral tank dress from Victoria’s Secret {ages ago} worn over it and dress belt used as a tie.
I almost wore a black leather belt with a gold buckle at my waist to sort of tie in the harsh black shoe but it just didn’t feel right so I left it out. Tank seen here as a top and seen here as a dress with leggings and blazer which I am kind of loving {and seemingly about 5lbs lighter there} and in the OLD gallery space. See the new, renovated gallery space here.
* Van Cleef and Arpels Alhambra INSPIRED necklace from Etsy
* D&G gold watch and simple gold hoops …sometimes I just can’t be bothered with too many accessories.
* Gucci classic stripe large cat eye sunglasses
* Guess buckle heels from 2008 …I can’t believe how often I am wearing these lately actually. I keep looking for a replacement pair that are a bit updated but with the same overall look but these just keep winning like Charlie Sheen.
* Title: lyrics from Cyndi Lauper “She Bop” …this was one of my first tapes, this and Madonna, of course. And yes, I said tapes for those of you born in the 90’s 😉
Dear Plus Sized Retailers,
While I am a curvy woman, I still only wear a size 6. And while I know that by Fashion Industry standards and Hollywood standards a size 6 is considered plus size, I guarantee you that in reality, it is not. So please, please stop sending me emails in which you offer to send me plus sized garments to wear in my outfit posts. It’s not gonna happen.
Thank you for your consideration,
Maegan
* please note, for political purposes I must state that I have no such issues with plus sized humans 😉 It is not my goal to offend anyone. But I am, however, a bit offended by the emails, even if I am a few lbs heavier than normal.

OMG!I can’t believe you’ve been getting emails from plus sized retailers! That’s ridiculous!
And you look amazing in these photos! Love the dress layering. Need to try it 🙂

Maegan – between seeing you at Blogher and catching this outfit? You’re just too adorable! I remember back when I first started Denim Debutante – http://www.denimdebutante.com – seeing you in your J Brand Lovestory jeans and just being so excited to see you rock them!

CessOviedo
So you are not only the queen of DIY but now of dress layering too! It’s genius how you layered them, I actually thought it was the same dress until I read it!

Hija @ work

AJ TAYLOR

Plus size?!? Really? Thats insane. You certainly don’t look plus size! Such a cute outfit & love the shoes.
Melody
I can’t believe your getting those emails! While theres nothing wrong with being plus size, you def. do not look plus size.. crazyy people!
Love the layering! Looks great! : )
MJ
All I can say is WTF?! Some people are crazy (and stupid). You look good girl. Women are supposed to have curves, but that doesn’t mean we’re fat. Insert huge eyeroll.

Well that offends me too, because if you are plus sized, then I must be super DUPER plus sized at a size 16. 🙂
GORGEOUS ouftfit, loving how you layered the dresses. That black and white tribal-esque print is amazing!
Rachel
I’m plus size and you are definately far from it! you know how to pull off this outfit for sure…looks great!
lizajane
my brain just exploded at the notion of you being plus-sized.
omg
Della
Hahaha! Even at a size ten I’ve gotten plus sized emails…I’m a size below the national average! I get very offended.
I love the dress layering!
Amanda Blair
PLus sized?! If you are than consider me a whale…I hate people sometimes.
Obviously that would offend anyone who isn’t putting themselves out as a plus size blogger. You are NOT even close to being plus sized…and can we just get rid of that word?! It’s disgusting and hurtful.
rental mobil
Very nice, thanks for sharing.
Holly Courtney
You’re looking gorgeous as always, Maegan, and are certainly NOT plus size. I would take their offers as a compliment, though, rather than criticism. Tall, thin, and curvy ladies such as you and me can usually pull off larger sized items and belt them at the waist or whatnot. I think they contacted you because your blog gets so much exposure and you are so good at being creative in the way you style your daily outfits. I don’t personally know of many plus size personal style blogs and the ones I do know of certainly don’t get as much exposure as yours. They probably thought you could work your creative magic on something in the smallest size they offer.
Jaclyn T
I REALLY like this outfit! The colour combo and layering looks fab. If you are plus sized, my 10/12 body must be morbidly obese!!

Also, is it difficult to have a healthy body image living in LA?

I won a $25 gift certificate to the Steamy Kitchen Shop…but they don’t ship to Canada. I’m giving it away on my blog:

Very smart, someone get this lady her own tv show.

That is crazy, you have such a great, slim figure.

I’ve been thinking about this and agree with Holly Courtney (above poster)…….You have been using several over-sized dresses, etc. and re-making them into fantastic fashions! Easy to buy oversized thrift store items, too! I’m slender, and have worn several of my mom’s dresses which are large, belted them and worn a jacket/coat over them! Just sayin’………
Miyan
i cant even believe you get emails like that, thats crazy! anyways, you look fantastic and hope you dont let stupid retailers get under your skin, you definetly do not look plus size.

people are craaazy about the plus size. You are absolutely gorgeous and not any in way a plus size. I so wish I had your amazing curvy body, you have the perfect shape. I am completely baffled at this ….

oh and I love those shoes !!

Cute! I love that bright, preppy look on you! Of course, you look terrific in just about anything. 😉

First of all, I love the layering! It looks so good on you!
Second, how can they send you those emails?!?! If you are a plus size what is left for the real plus size women in this world? Can’t they dress pretty clothes? This is unbelievable!
Alison Purple
I love this outfit. So cute. Look, you tell those plus retailers you will take their clothes and I will wear them. You can do an outfit post with me! Lol…seriously though ; )
Ashe @ Dramatis Personae
My best friend, who runs an eco-friendly site and is a SIZE 4 gets those emails too! She typically just refers them to me (which you are welcome to do as well). That’s insane. Even if the retailer carried a size 12, you’d still be 3-4 sizes too small for it.
In other news, I was looking at this outfit, thinking how damned good it looked, and how I’d NEVER have thought to pair those two items together that way, and layer them as such. Thank you for a dose of inspiration!
Louise
Good Lord! I hope you had a good laugh over those emails! It amazes me that our culture has become so accustomed to seeing waif sized women as the norm. Even here in little New Zealand … I’m a small NZ size 10 (which is a US size 6) and was shopping in a high end store recently, I picked up a stretchy body con style and was having a moment of doubt over how it would fit as it was a size smaller than I would usually buy. The sales assistant looked me up and down with a slightly disgusted expression and said ‘Well … it’s not like you’re HUGE but still… ‘
Seriously! Anyways, LOVE this outfit and those sunglasses are uber hot on you. Love your blog! (been a reader for oh, maybe two years and this is my first comment. Shocking I know).
Sarah Jean
I guess it goes both ways….I get stuff about anorexia because I’m a size 2.
Sarah Jean
PS- I did a presentation in a college media class about how the average woman is a size 14, yet stores and ads promote size 0 and 2. I’ve worked at many stores, and I can tell you that they do that on PURPOSE. I was even asked to model at one of my stores, not because I was the prettiest girl there (which I definitely wasn’t) but because I was the same size as the mannequins. How gross!
Chicago Mom (Heather)
That is ridiculous. You look like a size 6 to me!?
Natalya's Closet
I love how you doubled up the dresses, so chic! XOXO, http://www.NatalyasCloset.com

Love the layering, it looks fantastic!! xo

Rita here. Well, I’m a 16W & I read your column every day, but I don’t look at sizes, I look at the person. Every individual’s body type is different. You can’t just lump women into one group or another based upon size. I interpret your fashion ideas with what would work for my body type. Some work, some don’t, but I always find an idea or two that I can use. The idea of your blog is to see what can work for the reader. A woman should buy what fits, and what fits has to look good. The hell with the size. It’s just a number. If you look good, are healthy, and feel good about yourself, what does it matter if you’re a size zero or size 14? The fashion industry and magazines need to get real. I mean seriously. American women are far too obsessed over their bodies and sizes, I feel, and it’s largely due to the influence of the fashion industry. Dress for you, stop being a slave to Wall Street. 🙂 And thanks, Meagan, for showing us all how to dress outside of the box.
Vanessa, Take only Memories
Ha! It’s so ridiculous that you get offers like that! And don’t think a size 6 should be considered a plus size in any standard.
You look amazing! I wish I could pull off wearing two dresses on top of each other!
Katie
Who in their right mind would think you are a plus sized model. Things like that drive me absolutely crazy about our society!
Alela Sirah
Love the layering looks 70’s secretary so cute!

Liesl
Happy Hump Day to you too!!! I just love all your layering…it is inspiring to do a little of my own and that pink is such a beautiful color on you! Beautiful!
Oh and can I just add that the fact that a size 6 is considered plus size is just plain silly, and you by no means are that…oh Hollyweird! 😉
Liesl 🙂
heifer?
Plus size? Are you freaking kidding me? Wow, the fashion industry is f*cked up. Does that make my size 8/10 body morbidly obese? Hey fashion industry, wake up! Curves are sexy!
DeniseAngela
What kind of world do we live in when anyone would think you are plus size?!! I am curvy too…..that’s why I started sewing some of my own dresses last year…..the retailers do not know how to make clothes for us & now thinking this? So messed!
Alex
really like that!

My wife loves your shoes!
Team Gage!
Idea: accept their offers, belt them, style them in your Maegantastic way, photograph them, and give them away to your loyal plus size readers!!
Or if that is too much work, you can forward the emails to a loyal plus size reader (me).
Much Love, Texdoll
pghbekka
I love the layering, and the belt as tie pulls it together beautifully.
On the subject of plus size: We get plus size catalogs for my husband, since, well, he’s tall and large. So we’ve also been added to a women’s plus size list, because if he’s plus-sized, I must be too, right?
I love some of the clothes they feature, but none of them will fit 5’1″, size 8 me.
Alysson
WOW!! You have got to be kidding me! you have a rockin bod..what are they thinking?!?!
**love your side note too…haha oooh some people!
Tiffany
haha, I’ve had plus size retailers reach out to me too and I’m a size 0. I don’t think they actually read our blogs and look at our body types.
Love the dress over the dress! i might have to try this out myself.
LuLu
Completely agree! Size 6 is NOT plus size (I am size 6). By no means do you look like a plus size I must say. You look gorgeous!
A Candid Life

Lovely beautiful dress, love your sandal.

I love this look. The layering is almost like a sweater vest effect! But not at all nerdy 😛

Just ran across your blog!! I love it!! Love your style and love your video tutorials!!
FYI.. I was thinking to myself as I looked through your posts, “man, she has a great body. I bet she works out. I need to hit the gym. Wait, what?? ..she’s a size 6?? … I’m a size 6!!” Let’s just say that I’m constantly stressing about my weight. Seeing you look fabulous in everything that you wear, well it gave me confidence in my own body…so thanks!!! ..made me love you and your blog even more:)
