I found this great hand built rustic dresser at a thrift shop for $200 a few years ago to house the husband’s clothes and to match our old Tropical Master Bedroom. It was perfect and I loved scoring such a treasure.
In our new master bedroom, however, it doesn’t really work. The unfinished wood with dark bronze handles doesn’t really match the glam modern Gatsby look I’m going for in the space, which has gray walls and silky lavender and gold/taupe drapes.
Finally, after living with it for a year and a half, I got busy last weekend refinishing it, and I love the look. It’s crazy how a little paint can literally change the entire look of the dresser and take it from tropical rustic to glam… spending very little to do so and without changing any of the hardware at all.
I used a gloss black paint, which in person is really great, but in photos or under harsh light, tends to amplify brush strokes and any imperfections in the wood, and there were plenty. I used sponge brushes instead of hairs/bristles because it was not only ten times easier, but also, they don’t leave as many stroke marks {in person} or rogue brush hairs in the paint.
I simply spray painted the pulls gold and and when it was all said and done, took my gold Sharpie paint pen and outlined the innermost beveled edge. I wasn’t sure it was going to work, and ready to paint over it with black, but it totally added that extra unique chic glam look with very little skill, technique, and time. It took seconds and dried just as fast as I marked it on.
