Hair Trend RevisitedSoft Faux Dreads

A semi-twist/faux dread look, April 21, 2009 See original CGOP here

Of course you can imagine that I love this look. I love all looks …and I’ll try anything. It’s fun to play around with styles and this happens to be quite an easy one to achieve. I’ve found it works best on hair with a bit of texture {a.k.a. one day dirty hair}. But if you have the kind of hair that needs to be washed daily, it will be just as easy.

Some use waxy products to achieve texture, but I like a mixture of water {in a spray bottle} and Hair Spray because waxes and pomades tend to weigh my hair down. But really, you should use whatever works best on your hair to achieve the desired look. Also, this look is supposed to be a bit messy so work with your hair, not against it …you don’t want it to look too “done” or “perfect” …and you can do this on short hair as well as long.

Steps: Mist hair with water {dampen only}, Section off about an inch of hair for Vanessa’s look or about 1/2″ for Jenny’s look, Twist section of hair from top to bottom, use a flat iron {clamp iron from top to bottom holding a couple seconds at each section} to “set” twist {you may need to back-comb or tease it a bit then flat iron again}, Hair spray and move onto the next. There is a cute little video here that’s a bit more complex and time consuming for me but it includes more tips if you need them. Have fun!

I was just talking to a friend recently about how my hair tries to do that naturally. I’ve been attempting to *stop* it and loosen the curls into ringlets. Nice to know that if I’m short on time one morning, I can embrace the natural tendency!

love this look. mostly because my hair is curly and if i use a conditioner for straight hair, that what my hair does, kinda twists on its own and creates the natural soft dread look. i prefer it on vanessa, not so much on jenny. i like how it looks on you-*much* better than on jennifer aniston. i like her, but i prefer her straight her.

Hey this is my first time commenting but there is a hair dryer you can buy that has an attachment that twirls your hair and makes it looks like beach hair.

Its the remington d1001 ceramic air dryer. Its awesome!

I always think Jessica Szohr’s hair looks so hot like this…. ooooh if only i could pull it off that well.

every summer i go through a little phase were i wish i had ‘locks after going to music/camping fests, but perhaps this is the perfect alternative!

Hey Megan! I found your blog a couple weeks ago and I love it! I just wanted to comment to tell you that I was clicking around on your blog and read your post about your surgery. I am so glad I did, because I just went to the girly doc here in Germany for the first time, petrified. He pulled out the long plastic ‘stick’ and unrolled a condom over it…and I thought, “WTF?” Then I remember you had it done too and I relaxed (a little)! So anyway, a long way to say thank you 🙂

I just finished watching the GG episode (yes I’m late), and was wondering what the heck was up with Jessica’s hair. I like it on Taylor and you look terrific with the style, but it just looks weird on both her and Jen Aniston. I think the trick is making it look natural? It looks a bit too dread-like on the other too and I think it also looks better on blondes. I kept thinking Jessica’s hair needed a good wash until I saw the close-ups on your blog!

This look is only for the young. If I tried this look, I’d be picked up for vagrancy.

I love all your hair tutorials. You look great and you know how to do everything. Like I said, you need to come do my hair. It hasn’t been styled in years. Just straight up and down. I would like to make it look like yours sometimes. Too cool.
