This is the faux tree that Micheal’s sent me to decorate last year, and because it’s too small for our living room now, it gets to make the upstairs hallway merry and bright! And since the upstairs hallway is filled with the furnishings that once belonged in our Game Room/Den in our old house, including our gold tree stumps, I went with a gold and white themed tree to match. AND I thought I had an old gold and white tree topper to use, but I did not. SO I had to make one… and originally I made a simple, flat star from pipe cleaners that I was going to share… however, when I was editing my photos for my DIY Geo Ornaments yesterday, I conceptualized an entirely new one with dimension. And I love it… And here it is!
What You’ll Need…
- Metallic pipe cleaners
- Wire cutter
- Wire {I used 21.9m} optional, but makes it easier
Steps…
You’re going to need about 17 pipe cleaners for this + one more to use as structural engineering 😉
You’re basically making 6 large triangles… begin by bending two pipe cleaners into V’s and the third into a box or rectangle
NOTE: Two of your triangles will not have the square/rectangle bases {though I realized this later}
Using your metallic wire, close off your square or rectangle.
Now bend the edges of your V’s at the ends and attach them to the larger sides of your square/rectangle.
Fold your V’s up and bind them together with your wire…
Make 6 of these … again, two of them don’t actually need the square/rectangle part, so just create the double V’s attached at the top.
You will attach your four triangles together at the corners
Like this…
It will become a 3D star with four points… then with your remaining double V’s, attach them just like you did on the others, but to the two open spaces left on your “star”. Basically adding points to the front and back.
And… Voila!
Since it’s open, you can just slide it over the top of your tree and set it how you like it best!
You can also use it as decor… and make a smaller one as its companion!
Though the angle isn’t quite right in the photo above, it’s very cool just sitting on a table or stack of books.
