I’m so happy to share that I’ve partnered with Ecco Domani Wine again this year and will be working with this fabulous Italian brand throughout the next eleven months, give or take a few, and I hope you enjoy our collaborations as much as I do. No matter how hectic life gets, it’s so important that we enjoy the simple pleasures and the very little things that can upgrade a moment, a day, a month, and especially, a lifetime.
Now that we’re fully immersed in the month of all things romantic, I thought I’d spread the love with this Gold Dust LOVE Print DIY that’s sweet with a bit of an edge because love doesn’t have to be sappy, does it? Love is cool and gritty and fun and anything we make it. But to soften the edges a bit, I also created a pretty butterfly print in the same technique that complements the other, just like a perfect friendship or relationship does. And that’s what Valentine’s Day is about really, so let’s share the love with everyone this month, including ~ and maybe most importantly, with ourselves.
This is the perfect last minute Valentine’s gift for your besties, and even makes the perfect love note or card if you’d rather not frame it.
But first… a little wine please!
Let’s upgrade this DIY session with a glass of crisp and refreshing Ecco Domani Pinot Grigio and toast to enjoying these freezing winter months while anticipating, daydreaming, and looking forward to warm summer nights. Oh the sound of that just makes me smile. CHEERS!
In the photos below you’ll also see my DIY Heart Etched Wine Glasses and DIY Leather Butterfly Pins, which also make lovely gifts for Valentines as well as my DIY Valentine’s Day Love Notes because it’s always just a teensy bit more special to make the presents, don’t you think? So let’s get to it!
Here’s What You’ll Need…
- My LOVE print you can download here OR Butterfly sticky notes or shapes of choice
- Black drawing paper or black construction paper
- Metallic/gold spray paint + gold glitter if you want a little sparkle
- Washi tape {or any tape that doesn’t have a strong adhesive}
- Scissors / Ruler / Blade
- Frames of choice {the gold one shown is vintage}
Steps…
Print out your LOVE template and carefully cut out your letters using a hard edge and a blade.
If you’d rather use your letters for your print vs the square background, that’s cute too!
Using your frame for reference {unless you’re just going to tape your print up – OR – fold it into a card} center your LOVE stencil and using washi tape, set your stencil on your black paper and press in place.
Measure and mark your corners if you want a perfect edge.
In an open ventilated area, artfully spray paint your stencil onto your black paper. You can add as much gold or as little as you like. It’s all up to you. I like the messy, overspray effect on this one…
If you spray too much, however, you can use black or an alternate color to add a bit more depth or even splatter paint with acrylics once your spray paint is dry. Get creative!
Let dry…
Add it to your inspiration boards, tape it to your gallery wall, or slip it into your favorite frame!
And Now For your Butterflies…
Grab your butterfly sticky notes, or any shapes you like, and stick/place them onto your black paper to create your design.
Use a little tape if your shapes don’t come with self-adhesive backs.
Run them by your quality control inspector… 😉
Repeat the steps above to create your butterfly print.
When I removed my butterflies, I thought the gold stickies were just as cute and decided to include them in the print as well. I used one to create a bit of a shadow effect and the others I just placed on top of the gold for a textured feeling. If you have a shadow box or frame with some depth to it, the butterflies will really look cute as a 3D art installation, just make sure your butterflies are strongly adhered so they don’t fall off.
And… Voila!
Grab a few black frames, make your prints and give them as gifts to your BFFs for Valentine’s Day!
Or slip them in your coolest frame and keep them for yourself! Better yet, make a matching pair for the both of you!
I did a similar nail art manicure with black and gold inspired by my prints by dabbing on a few dots of gold onto my dry black lacquer and blotting with a tissue until I got a gold dust effect. Do all your nails or just a few accents.
Find my DIY Heart Etched Wine Glasses tutorial, which make great gifts as well!
I love the way they look surrounding my vanity, side by side hanging on a wall, or part of a gallery wall. It’s a great way to upgrade your art collection without spending too much and the best part comes when someone compliments them and you get to say “Thanks, I made them!” and you can too!
Cheers! Have Fun! Happy Valentine’s Day!
