The art world can be a bit intimidating sometimes, even for someone like me who has worked in it for over ten years. It’s unknown, it’s pretentious, it’s expensive and all those words are scary. I watched many clients come in with new money, just buying what they thought would be a good investment without any real art knowledge. And while that is one way to buy art, there is another option, and that is to buy art that you love. And buying art that you love regardless of the dollar value gives it immense worth because it is special to you.
Buy art that makes you feel good or art that makes you smile. Buy art from a design perspective that pulls your room together and creates a focal point. Buy art that creates a mood or ambiance… but any great art dealer will tell you to buy art that you love. If you don’t love it, it won’t speak to you and you won’t be able to live with it.
The art on my walls inspires me, it makes me think, makes me smile and in some rooms, is the focal point. Some of my works are by established artists and others are prints and a few are even by my own hand. I collect art as I do my wardrobe; I mix high-end with low, vintage with new and a few DIYs as well. I couldn’t live in a house without art. And yes, art is an investment, but art is also fun and discovering art that you love is as simple as falling in love with it.
Art.com‘s You+Art feature allows you to browse art and save works that you love to galleries that you create. For instance, I have a “Black & White Photography” gallery, a gallery I called “Have & Want” which includes a few works I have and a few that I want and a “Just Pretty” gallery for works that are obviously, just pretty. You+Art makes it easy to discover the art you love and gives you the power to curate your own collections. {It’s like Pinterest but just with art!}
