How-to Make a DIY Denim Wine Bag with Flowers

Denim DIYs are among my favorite to work on and create. I mean, who doesn’t have a pair or two of old jeans in the back of their closet that they never wear anymore… let alone, a bunch of scraps and “legs” lying around after we cut them all into shorts for summer? Denim is also one of the easiest fabrics to work with, so when I was thinking about this end of summer DIY wine bag, denim was my go-to fabric of choice.Wine is the perfect gift to bring just about anywhere, and Ecco Domani Pinot Grigio is obviously my gift of choice. It is light and delicious and pairs well with just about anything your hosts are serving, but it’s also great on it’s own too. You can never go wrong with a nice bottle of wine but when it comes in a cute handmade bag, it makes it even more special.This DIY denim wine bag is not only adorable, it’s the perfect way to use and recycle our old denim and jeans, save a buck in the process, AND offer a personal touch to an already fabulous gift of Ecco Domani Pinot Grigio. So let’s get to it!

Here’s What You Need…

• Ecco Domani Pinot Grigio 😉
• An old pair of jeans or denim pants, the more tattered the better. I used a relatively wide leg for this… You can also simply use denim fabric and start from scratch.
• Scissors
• Matching thread/needle

 

Steps…

Insert your wine bottle into the leg of your jeans to determine how much fabric you’ll need.

Decide how much of a “paper bag” look you’ll want on top. If you want to cover the entire bottle, add more length.

Leaving about an inch or so, cut the leg off.

Turn your leg inside out and run a simple stitch across the bottom. You can do this by hand or on a sewing machine, obviously.

Turn it right side out and it will look something like the photo above.

From another section of your denim or jeans, cut a 1/2″ strip, about 12″ long.

Center the strip with the side seam about one to two inches from the top, and stitch in place.

TIP: Insert your bottle into the bag so you know just where you want to tie it around the bottle.

It will look something like this…

You can leave it simple like this if you like… OR…

Create cute little denim flowers to add to it. Here’s how…

Cut 1-2″ circles in various sizes.

Place them on top of each other, and pinch and twist with your fingers…

Then stitch in place, while still twisting and pinching, to create the flower look you like.

Stitch them wherever you like on your bag. I chose to make the bag a bit more snug by stitching them to the side seam.

I also stitched a tiny flower to the end of one of my ties.

TIP: It’s easier to get a feel for where you want your flowers while your wine bottle is in the bag.

 

And… Voila!

So cute, so sweet, and simple too! Make a few of them to keep on hand so you have them ready whenever you want to give the gift of wine to someone!
