My Hollywood Regency 1940s Bathroom in Original Black & White & Yellow

Old Hollywood retro vintage bathroom, black and white and yellow bathroom

One of my favorite things about my new house is this old bathroom… I JUST LOVE IT 🖤 💛

It’s black and white with a yellow tile counter and an arch over the tub/shower and it reminds me of all the bathrooms in all the old houses I grew up in as well as family friends bathrooms in the Valley and various Old Hollywood homes and apartments built around the 1940s or earlier. They all generally had black and white flooring with either pink and burgundy or yellow and white or aqua and teal tiled countertops and showers and the moment I stepped into it in the open house, I knew it was meant to be.

Since I’m not doing any major renovations to the house or even painting, I wanted to have fun with this space and really play up the Old Hollywood glamour by revving up the black and white details. And since the colors in POP art are usually BOLD, BRIGHT and almost always include YELLOW, I thought it was a perfect way to bring in some of my little pop art pieces and really add a bit of kitsch to this bathroom and contrast the seriousness with a little fun.

I grabbed a print of me (over the toilet) by James Haunt which was previously in my closet in the townhouse and my Warhol diamond dust shoes print, my little replica Roy Lichtenstein (above the mirror) and then 4 more Roy Lichtenstein nudes I had saved from my gallery days and framed in black with white mattes.

If I’m being honest, my least favorite part about the tub/shower situation is the plastic curtain that drives me insane while in the shower, so I layered on my old DIY white satin curtain panel with black tassels on the halfway point for drama and weight to keep the plastic curtain in place. It doesn’t really work, but I LOVE the look of it, so it stays. I only used one so my other panel is free (for now) but I might use it in the laundry room once I get to that space.

* Sidebar: this is the best shower head ever made, ever.

* Above is late afternoon lighting without brightening the photo, thus the color difference. ALSO NOTE: the white and yellow speckled tile in the shower walls is not original and looks to have been added in or around the ’70s

* NOTE: I first used these curtains in my first office/closet/dressing room and then when I moved to Lake Arrowhead, I used these curtains in the Reading Room in my first house and then in the guest room in the second house.

Since the bathroom is quite spacious, I purchased a pretty large rug with tassels to add some warmth (visually and for my bare feet, post shower) and decided one day that a little seat was necessary to fill the space. I remembered this gold and white octagon stool I’ve used in past rooms and set it in place. Then I determined that it needed a black accent and so I hot-glued a black tassel trim around the edges and it did the trick!

I would love to paint the sconces black, but I think they’re original and so instead I just tied black satin bows on the pulls and that makes me happy for now.

I removed all the original chrome hardware from the walls and just added a few simple black hooks for hand towels and my shower towels and luckily I didn’t have to do much more to give this space the fun Old Hollywood glam look without spending a dime. Okay, well, I did buy the rug, and the plastic shower curtain and the shower caddy to hold all my products (which you can’t see because I removed it for the photos, but it hangs from the showerhead). But that’s really it.

I have to say that it’s cuter in person than in photos because it’s difficult to get the lighting right due to the yellow/white combo. I tried in the early daylight, the afternoon filtered light and the evening, so some photos are light and some dark, not that it really matters to anyone but me BUT I felt like I needed a disclaimer 😊

Randy wasn’t feeling so great this day, thus his slumped demeanor, but he’s doing better now.

Annnnd… one appearance from Trevor

Just feeling that black cat energy in my Old Hollywood bathroom with that filtered natural light! 💋🐈‍⬛😻
