My niece, Delilah (who is almost 8 years old now, can you believe it?!?) is finally unafraid of the curvy drive up the mountain and came to visit last week. While she stayed almost 8 days, I didn’t get to spend as much time with her as I would have liked to, but our moments together were definitely fun and full of love and laughter and playfulness.
We spent some time on the lake paddle boarding with her friends, danced and played games together, but more than anything she wanted to be in an outfit post with me and show off her pretty ruffled tropical dress. Once we began shooting though, she became a little shy and she realized it may not have been as fun as she had anticipated.
She fluttered around quietly in the background as we continued shooting, keeping one eye on me as I modeled my outfit, posing and giggling with my mom as she snapped away, and I couldn’t help but wonder what Delilah was garnering from the situation.
I wondered if she would grow up comfortable in her own skin, as I am, and felt gratitude in the moment for the way my mom instilled a sense of confidence in my own strengths. I can only hope Delilah has a strong sense of self as she grows into a teenager and becomes a woman who isn’t afraid to express herself freely and enjoy all that life has to offer.
Whether by example or sharing words of wisdom, I hope I can help guide her and teach her to embrace life instead of fear it, to push the boundaries and dance with the unknown, and above all keep the innocent joy and wonder and curiosity she holds now all the way into adulthood.
These are qualities that propel us through life’s difficult and challenging times, urging us to live a life we truly love and to do what is right for our own hearts, regardless of what others think.
I want Delilah to have the freedom and courage to be bold and strong, knowing that she can be and do whatever she wants to in this world, to go out and get it, and be an inspiration to others. It takes a strong heart and clear mind to face life sometimes, but we all have it in us to shine like the sun and walk in its beautiful rays of light.
