Happy December, Lovecats!
Where has this year gone?!?! I have no idea but I do know that the new year brings a fresh start (or at least the feeling of a fresh start) and I’m here for that!
Speaking of starting, I started holiday decorating a few days before Thanksgiving (hope you and your family had a lovely one!) and got only as far as putting the tree up and plugging it in. There is something so easy about having a faux tree that makes Christmas decor a snap (even if the tree is faux flocked and makes a giant mess – this is the exact tree I have, it’s 7.5, flocked and lit with warm white lights) it’s there, we have a tree!
…and that’s about as far as I got.
We had a little snowstorm in the mountains over Thanksgiving and major power outages (our house still currently only has half the power back, but at least we have heat! Thanks to the crafty electrician I live with who was able to switch the breakers so that the heater gets power, otherwise we’d be frozen dead by now… but I digress) the idea of dragging up all the holiday decor in the dark and frozen ice-clad steps, did not amuse me and so the undecorated Christmas tree sits in our dark living room all sad and lonely until the power returns.
But in my constant Instagram perusing, and all the holiday decor that is already abound, this black and white large check plaid print (also known as Buffalo Plaid – but really just looks like a large gingham check) is popping up (and out at me) EVERYWHERE! And I kind of love it!
I think the trend may have started last year but it’s hitting hard now… but either way, it’s a classic black and white look that has a country farmhouse kind of vibe but that also somehow feels totally modern and fresh AND I’m thinking it’s the perfect solution to tie together a tree that will for sure be ordained with mismatched Disney ornaments because I now live with children and their dad, who in all his romantic sentimentality has already hung an ornament on the tree from the the movie “UP”.
So I’ve been trying to figure out a solution to this conundrum (for me only, of course) that will tie the tree decor together to give it an overall theme (among all the mismatched Disney ornaments) and somehow look chic – or else I will have completely regressed to my childhood wherein I battled my mom every Christmas over the cluttered graveyard of mismatched ornaments that covered the tree. Though on one occasion, she used tiny red apples and little red plaid bows all over the tree and even among the mess, it looked pulled together… so I’m thinking the black and white buffalo plaid will offset the clutter and tie it together in a rustic way that matches the living room, which will make us all happy with the way it turns out; they get their sentimental Disney tree and I get a holiday living room that I can still look at and love.
Black and White Buffalo Check Holiday Decor Inspiration…
Some are really beautifully subtle…
While others are wildly overdone…
But either way, they’re cute…
Super cute in kids rooms and guest rooms if you have holiday visitors!
I love the rustic simplicity of this one1
The buffalo check table settings are really cute too…
Ways to add buffalo plaid to your holiday decor…
The buffalo plaid stockings are cute, but I have so many stockings already, not sure I want to buy anymore (but I could simply tie ribbons on the stockings and get the look!)… I’m kind of lOVING this buffalo check print armchair, but wow, I’d have to really be committed for that purchase. Super cute though. These buffalo pillow covers are only $13.99 for FOUR! (quality, not sure?) That’s a deal I can get behind and swap out a few pillows on the couch though and maybe a cute plaid throw blanket or a little rug even…
But hands down, the easiest way to incorporate it into the tree without redoing the entire living room (and/or spending a fortune) is to buy the black and white buffalo check ribbon and tie little bows all over the tree! I think I might mix it with some burlap/rope type ribbons as well for an overall rustic look… and then I can use the leftover ribbon to wrap gifts with and then everything will match and all will be well in the land of Maegan’s brain… (Is it just me???)
