I stumbled upon this Ted Talk How to Be Happy Every Day: It Will Change the World by Jacqueline Way the other day and was completely inspired by it.
Jacqueline Way is the founder of www.356give.ca, a charitable organization dedicated to educating, empowering, and inspiring children to change the world “one give, one day at a time.”
Even though I don’t have children, I think the importance of teaching them about giving and helping others at a young age shapes them into caring, compassionate and giving adults, which the world needs far more of.
365give inspires people to create a better, happier world by developing a habit of giving — one person, one give, one day at a time… by offering simple daily steps and challenges to follow to help guide children (and adults) to thinking more about others than themselves, even if just for one moment every day.
It’s hard not to think that a giving mindset can become a positive habit that will carry on into their later lives, but can also create special learning and bonding moments between parents and children. Overall, it’s just a wonderful idea… and we can all benefit from being a little more open-minded and mindful of things we can do to help out those in need and give a little bit more of ourselves in any way we can.
AND it’s healthy for us too; when we give, we get a positive boost of all the feel-good hormones we are searching for on a daily basis. It may be like Joey argued on Friends, “…there’s NO unselfish good dead – selfless good deeds don’t exist”, that any act of giving is selfish because it makes us feel good too, but ya know what, I think it’s worth it 😉
