When Michelle called me a few weeks ago to tell me she got us tickets for The DiscOasis I was ecstatic. Like giddy with excitement!
Not only had I been watching the entire oasis unfold on Instagram via all my favorite roller skaters, on this particular night, THEY WERE ALL GOING TO BE THERE hosting the party with Pigeon’s Roller Skate Shop, which made the event even MORE exciting!
We went last Tuesday and I’ve been talking about our night on Instagram ever since, and posted this DiscOasis recap reel, but I wouldn’t be a blogger if I didn’t share the entire story here as well, right? 🙂
BUT FIRST, I had to find something to WEAR!!!
My Last Minute DIY Upcycle Sequin Dress to Disco Top…
Here’s what it looked like before…
I bought this dress way back in 2011 to wear to the Sparklecorn party at the BlogHer conference and then wore it one other time on NYE but it’s been hanging in my closet ever since. It’s a little big on me now and I actually brought it to my office to sell (with the other closet full of stuff I’ve been meaning to sell but haven’t gotten around to) and I’m glad I didn’t because it turned into the perfect disco top!
I think I tried on every disco-70s-shiny thing I had in my closet actually and nothing was really working for me until I slipped on the shiny blue disco pants I bought years ago and never wore. I knew that some day they’d get their moment of glory and this was finally the day. However, not one of the tops I had gave me the disco 70s vibe I was looking for and then I remembered this dress…
After hitting a thrift store the morning of the day we were going for one last check, I rushed to my office and grabbed the dress, ran back home and started cutting it up.
It’s mesh on the under side so I was able to slice small sections into strips without killing the sequined stitches, although there are still random blue sequins all over my house and probably still in Michelle’s car… because as I was finishing I wasn’t sure if I was going to wear it as a dress (without the pants) or cut the lining out and wear it as a top.
I finally decided that I’d wear it as a top and did the finishing cuts in the car on the way.
When we arrived at the botanical gardens, I slipped on the dress and quickly realized it was too bulky… I felt like one of the Golden Girls going to a disco party, lol, so I grabbed the front sequin strips and tied them in a knot and Michelle helped me tie up my little fanny pack so it hit on my waist instead of my hips and I was good to go.
Before I tied it up…
What’s so funny is I am usually so ahead of the game when it comes to what I’m wearing and costumes especially. I always prepare and know what I’m wearing in advance and have it all ready but on this day, I was so unprepared and it was hilarious and completely unlike me.
In the end, it worked out 🙂
And… After…
After parking, we began our 10minute or so walk through some paved streets lined with trees until we finally reached the dirt roads and then began a super fun gallery of oversized and colorful, show-stopping props where hosts would welcome us as we walked by. I didn’t capture all of them, but here are a few of the most spectacular sets.
After we passed through the welcoming wagon, we approached this really fun botanical archway…
Then just a few more turns… and past the disco cactus…
And it finally opened up to where the roller rink was.
And it was so massive, like a disco oasis mirage in the middle of nowhere. It was really fantastic!
We were sort of in shock and awe at first (or all night) and walked around the rink to grab a drink and some food.
The only option was a pizza truck called Vivace LA and I must say, the pizza was pretty fantastic! They even did half and half for us 🙂
Then we asked a super sweet girl to take a photo of us against this massive sparkling wall…
And then it was time to skate!
Behind Michelle, skating off the rink is Keegan, who I know of from Instagram, and we met him and he is fabulous! His skate moves are so smooth and also, HIS OUTFIT!!
The skate floor was a bit funky and took a minute to get used to, but after a few times around, we knew what we were up against and let our wheels lead the way.
Below is Pigeon and friends doing the “Downtown”… (a move I have yet to master, but I’m close!)
And one of my favorite Insta-skaters, Kels being her groovy, fabulous self.
Once night fell it was even more magical… Everything was glowing, including our wheels, and the light alternating colors made it really fantastic.
