Jessica Rey thinks women have lost their modesty

This Q Talk, given by modest swimsuit designer Jessica Rey at a recent Q Ideas annual gathering has sparked quite a few heated discussions. And as Summer begins, I’m not exactly sure what side of the fence I’m on. I agree with some points, but disagree with others. Would love to know what YOU think!

Thanks for posting the bikini talk! I find this lady very rude, however. Nobody has the right to dictate what a woman “should” wear – she is no better than the people who tell women they should wear itsy bitsy bikinis. There is nothing wrong with covering up, but shaming bikini-wearing women is a form of slut-shaming, a practice that inhibits the progress of women on the whole to equality. While I like covering swimsuits and like her line, I will definitely avoid supporting it now that I know she peddles BS “natural sense of modesty” crap. That “natural sense” is the culture of body shame that has oppressed women for years.

That bikini talk made me, as a young and modest women, angry. It’s as if she was saying women were unaware of a bikini’s affect. We aren’t. I choose to be modest because of my child, but her slut shaming is pathetic. Not everyone says it has to be itsy bitsy. While she was on the right track about educating, she was on the wrong track about how to go about it. I have a lot to say on this matter, so I’m pretty sure I’ll be writing about it in the next few days once I’ve calmed down and can sound intelligent. Right now all I see is red.

Thank you though for posting this. It’s part of why I adore you and your blog.

the modesty girl is just wrong on so many levels. it’s not up to women to cover up because men will objectify us. rather, men should be taught not to objectify women in the first place.
