I can watch this Marilyn Monroe Costume Test for Something’s Got to Give over and over. I’m not exactly sure what it is about it but I’m not sure she is either. She’s just trying to give them what they want.
I think I’m having a moment…

I love her smile at the very end. I don’t think I’ve ever seen her with such a broad smile.

A trace of sadness and confusion amidst the smiles. You nailed it in that you’re not sure she’s sure that she’s giving them what they ‘want’.

I believe costume test usually refers to either (I’m digging into HS theater class knowledge, it’s a bit fuzzy ha ha):
1) Testing the movement and functions (if they have special features or technical bits) of costumes and how the move on camera/react to the wearer
or
2) Used as part of auditions to see how the potential actor/actress looks in the costume (this is usually for roles where he costume is key — like superman.)
I wonder if they were carefully checking the way the clothing reacted to her every little seductive move and wink. If only I had a crew working my outfits to such perfection each day 😉
