I LOVED Heidi’s Gucci dress on this week’s Project Runway and was inspired to make this easy cut up t-shirt to mimic the look of the top of her dress. If you want to get the full look, you can wear this t underneath a strapless dress in the same hues and silhouette as the Gucci version, but it’s just as cute alone as well.
Here’s What you’ll Need…

* Fitted t-shirt {non-stretch is preferable}
* Scissors
* Chalk or white pencil

* Flip t-shirt inside out and draw your design.

* Carefully cut out your pattern.
And… Voila!

If you use a thick jersey/high quality t-shirt, you should be able to wash and dry this t-shirt without any fraying/etc. The edges may curl up a bit, but not much. If it’s a brand new t-shirt and you like the way it fits now, wash it in cold and hang it to dry.
Have Fun!

Maegan,
Do these designers get pissed off at you and send you crazy emails because you’ve exposed the fact that they aren’t that clever?
You are awesome! Every time I see one of these DIY’s…I throw my head back and laugh out loud like Skeletor from the He-man cartoon and say “She’s bring these expensive fool designers DOWN, one by one!”
Then I spit. Wherever I am. I just spit. And I do it everytime as a salute to you!

I saw that dress sometime ago and loved it. Then, realizing it was Gucci and most likely out of my budget, I wondered if there could be a DIY. Love this shirt! Thanks!

GREAT IDEA!! Especially great idea for various T-shirts that have been damaged or accidently torn (such as our husband’s/boyfriend’s)! Often we have inexpensive T-shirt sales at the local pharmacy,craft stores, etc. Or, even at “flea-markets”, thrift shops, dollar stores. THE POSSIBILITY IS ENDLESS! THANK YOU, MAEGAN FOR ONE OF YOUR BEST AND EASY IDEAS YET!

Erm, nice try….
but if you’re looking to wear this shirt as part of your wardrobe, I would suggest doing something about the plain edges. Fray checker? Hemming? You decide. But just leaving it bare doesn’t sound like a good idea.
drollgirl
super easy, super fab, and super fun! JUST LIKE ME. kidding. i am on a roll today. :[

I tried it! Mine definitely didn’t turn out as well as yours did (my cutting wasn’t the most straightest…) but I like it! Thanks for the idea! Someone mentioned layering it under a strapless dress, fab idea, probably could layer this a lot of ways.
Oh.. this may be obvious, but stay away from the fitted tissue tees, which is what I used, it doesn’t hold the shape exact to how you cut it.
mae
seriously. after seeing this, I exclaimed.. MAEEGAAANNN!! lol. you’re a genius, girl! i fell in love with heidi’s outfit after seeing it on PR finale. thanks so much!
mae
maybe, a slightly fitted halter dress to go on top of it, would work..ehhh?? can’t get enough of this, that i had to comment once again after sleeping overnight with this in my head. lol.
Becca
Great idea and so easy. I used this for my class t-shirt and it looks great.

I was just wondering how it holds up after washing. It looks great! I would definitely try it if I didn’t worry about what I’ve experienced with t-shirt shredding. The fabric rolls where it’s been cut and stretches out. Wouldn’t it do the same with yours unless you finished it with some stitching around the holes you cut? I think it’s a really cute idea if there are none of those flaws I mentioned in this plan.
