I found a little hair tutorial the other day by an adorable girl with a fabulous accent named Maria at thelipstickdiaries via craftgawker that I had never seen before. So I thought I’d try it …and because I did it a bit differently in the front than Maria demonstrated, I thought I’d share my results with you. But do click here for her tutorial or it won’t make much sense.
You do this with damp or almost dry hair. I didn’t brush mine before hand, as I never brush it when it’s wet. The difference: I parted my hair in the middle, used a 2″ stretchy cotton headband folded in half and around the crown of my head instead of at the base of my hairline.

Honestly, it was really comfortable, especially to sleep on. And my hair stayed in all night.

When I removed it in the morning {and decided to take photos in my robe and without makeup on like an idiot} I had really great ringlet curls in the front…

…but not so great curls in the back. {and maybe it has to do with how long my hair is?}

But it definitely gave my hair a great base to work with. I did end up using the curling iron, but only for a few curls in the back/top layer {see below}, and to straighten out the front/part/top section and I never brushed it, only used my fingers to tousle it and separate it a bit.
So, all in all, I was happy with the results and will probably do it often to save time in the morning by just having to curl a few sections instead of all of it. The front of my hair always seems the most damaged as well so not having to use heat there is a bonus.
These two photos below were taken at the end of the day …for my outfit post, which I will most likely publish tomorrow. But as you can see, it lasted all day …and honestly, all of the following day as well {with no products, not even hair spray}.

* Thanks Maria 😉 for teaching me something new! …check out her tutorial here.

Girl you are a natural beauty, not an idiot. Wishin I still had long hair so I could try this out!

I tried this too, with similar results to yours, ie curls in the front but waves at the back. I have super-straight hair so parts of it did slide out overnight. I was feeling reasonable happy with it but I went outside and the wind blew all the curls out! 🙁

That’s a great option for preventing hear damage! I actually think the curl/roll that is used to get the curls is very lovely as well. Your hair came out great, and I’m thinking you’re just as beautiful without the makeup.
Nicole Marie
i would wear my hair in that twist during the day!

I have the hardest time keeping the curl in my hair! It’s soo straight. I love the result on you though. With a few touch up curls- I think it looks great! XO

That hair style (with the head band) is actually my go-to party-do! I just tuck it all in, though, nothing thorough about it. Still, everyone asks if I’ve seen a stylist. I use an embellished head band and feel like a Greek goddess:)
It might be too private but do you think you could do a post on hair removal?

What awesome timing, the same thing happens to me kind of with the back being a little funky, but i just touch up with a curling iron as well. I like your method with the headband better too, my husband kept telling me I was in the WNBA the way I wore mine 🙂

I would have never guessed it !
It looks great to hold your air up in the summer, maybe even with a hat, or just as it is. I am going out after work to get me a head band.

Amazing tutorial–I am SO trying this tonight 🙂

I found that same tutorial a few weeks ago and love it! tip, I even wear my hair all rolled up out with some flowers stuck in it to cover the spot where the headband shows and people adore it! here’s another no-heat tutorial for a sock bun! the curling is ok, but mostly I just love the way the big perfect bun looks and think it would look super cute on you! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I13J7ArHTkM (plus she’s got a cute accent too)

Hi Maegan! Been following your blog for a while now since I came across it a few months ago, and I really love te way you share things. Just simple and sweet, kicking asses of all those full-of-themselves fashion stylists! Its really inspiring and helpful! Don’t think I’ve ever left a comment, but here I am now.
I’m attending a friend’s wedding at the weekend and when I saw this it came to my mind that I could try to do something like that to my hair. Mine is not that long so I’m gessing it would get curlier. Anyway, I’m needing some kind of advice… because sometimes, even a designer and style adviser like me, gets blown away by all the stuff going in her head. Check out my post if you can http://goo.gl/B6YnR.
by the way… love that statement necklace!

I’ve got my hair in a roll right now. We’ll see how it turns out but I’m hopeful that this will give my crazy straight hair a bit of curl. Thanks for sharing.

I was just wondering if you put product in your hair before doing the roll? or after? and what you used.
Natalia Valerie
Totally tried it last night and I have curls like woah! It shortened my hair like 3 inches. My BF isn’t loving it. But I think it’s fun. Reminds me of your fro hair style (which I am dying to do but I am too chicken!)
Maybe I’ll have to use bigger sections next time.

I have Asian hair (which means it’s straight as a board and wont hold a salon-created curl for more than an hour) and I live in humid Tampa. I tried this two nights ago after washing my hair and letting it mostly air-dry. I put mousse and some other hair product in my hair and then followed the video instructions…talk about amazing results! I wore my hair in a Shirley Temple-like style although my hair is very long on the first day. I re-rolled for the night and then wore my hair in a side-low ponytail with a flower ponytail holder and the long spiral curls still looked awesome. This is the first time I’ve EVER received flattering comments about curls in my hair! This is definitely a keeper!

great site, keep it up the good work.

Ok so I did this and I thought that I would have the same problem so I split my hair in top and bottom parts! It didn’t look as cute but I used a thin one like the girl in the video on the top and a large one on the bottom like you did and I could cover the small one! It worked out really well and there were only 2 little spots I had to re-curl! I don’t know if that would be helpful for you or anyone else! You are such a doll!
JLaSoul
I tried this last night and it really worked!!! My hair is about the same length as yours so I had similar results. The front had perfect curly but the back was wavy. Plugged in my curling iron and I was good to go. By the way, I just found your blog yesterday and I can’t stop reading it!!!
Joeyinstyle
I do this look all the time for a Boho chic look, let a few strands around the face free and keep it all day/night and magically I have a new hairdo ready for the next day without doing anything ! That’s also a great way to keep your hair protected from the heat and from damaging them .

I do this to my stick straight, won’t hold a curl, hair… and it holds all day.
One tip for all of you with “eh” back results. Wear the headband more like, well, Rambo? Mine lays across my forehead and the back goes across MUCH higher than you did it here Maegan. That gave me much more curl in the back.
Also, you want your hair almost dry… like 85% dry. Otherwise it might not be fully dry by morning. You can do something like this as an all day hairstyle (I separate out a chunk of “bangs” and run the headband through the center of that chunk… then do a couple pin curls with a pretty clip) and THEN sleep on it, too. Makes for some awesome curls!

Hiya Maegan! Thanks to you, I tried this and loved it! 🙂
