Joey Chestnut beats Kobayashi in OT

We just started off our 4th by watching the 2008 Nathan’s hot dog eating contest over breakfast. mmmm.

Last year I watched Joey Chestnut beat the six-year winning Takeru Kobayashi by eathing 66 hot dogs in 12 minutes. Kobayashi claimed he had an injured jaw and that is what lost it for him. I couldn’t wait {not really} to see them in action this year! The two top eating circuit competitors neck and neck again and this year, they shaved off 2 minutes.

They both have their own technique for shoving hot dogs and buns in their mouth at top speed but Kobayashi makes it look a bit easier than the rest. By the end of the 10 minutes, he is still fairly clean while the others have food and drink all over their faces, hands and shirts.

This year, the two tied by eating 59 hot dogs and buns each – which meant …you know it, over time! To break the tie, they were given 5 more hot dogs and buns and whomever polished them off the quickest won.

Today, like last year, Joey Chestnut takes home the Mustard Belt. Congratulations Joey, you did again! What an honor.

When it’s over, they have to stay on stage and give interviews and they all look like they are in so much pain and are about to vomit. They were interviewing Kobayashi and the translator asked him what went wrong this year …why didn’t he win? And he replied …”It was one hot dog”

Looking forward to next year’s competition already. Who will it be? {my money’s always on Kobayashi but just once I’d like the Black Widow to take home the belt}

Happy 4th of July!
