How to Make a Pretty DIY Bow Sweater with Open Back

pretty sweater DIY with open back and satin bow tie DIY

Last week, or maybe it was the week before, and inspired by a pretty photo of the back of a sweater closed with a bow on Pinterest, I pulled out two sweaters from my closet that I never wear to makeover, transform and adorn, with pretty bows. The one you see here did indeed receive a bow, but the other one was simply left with a pretty open back and no bow, which I like just as well. And though this one didn’t turn out exactly like my inspiration photo, I think it’s just as whimsical, and I like it just the same.

What You’ll Need…

DIY Sweater with a bow in the back

* Sweater
* Ribbon… I used satin ribbon but grosgrain would be pretty as well and create a much stiffer bow
* Needle/Thread/Pins/Scissors

DISCLAIMER: As you can see above, this sweater already had a cut-out back, making this project very simple. HOWEVER you can create a cut-out simply by following this DIY OPEN BACK SWEATER TUTORIAL. You can also choose your shape as well. This sweater had a U shape already to it, the DIY Cut Out Back Sweater I did last week has a V. You can also choose to make it smaller like a keyhole.

I was excited to use these ribbons which I saved from Burberry gift wrapping 😉

Steps…

* As stated above, this sweater already had a cut-out, so I simple had to remove the knitted strip across the back. I did this with a seam ripper and carefully removed the threads without cutting into the knit.

* Cut your ribbon to the desired length. Cut one end on an angle for a pretty finish and the other straight across. Carefully singe both ends with a lighter to prevent fraying.

* Fold over your straight edge about an inch…

* Pin it to the UNDER side of your sweater with the folded side hidden under and the right side of the ribbon {if there is one} on top.

* Using matching thread {to your sweater}, carefully hem-stitch the ribbon around the edges to the knit sweater and across the top to secure it. Make sure you don’t pull your thread too tight and gather or pucker the knit. This large-knit sweater was easy to stitch on and hide the thread within.
