Way back in 2013 it was really hard to find a classic camel coat, let alone a GOOD camel coat… and then I found this one by SMYTHE and fell in love. It’s well-fitting, timeless and gorgeous and though it cost me an arm and a leg, it was totally worth it.
The classic style and shape reminds me of one of my all-time favorite coats I found at the Melrose/Fairfax flea market way back in the late ’90s when I was about 19 years old for $30 and I still wear it every fall/winter, over twenty years later.
When you find a great and timeless coat you can wear for years, it’s clear in this case that cost doesn’t matter. Though my $30 flea market find story is a little more fun, I’ve already gotten 7-8 years of cute outfits out of this gorgeous camel coat and have years ahead of me for more 🙂
SHOPPING TIP 1: look for a weighted/woven fabric with full luscious lining, great pockets and a perfect fit (that has a bit of contouring at the waist which is more flattering rather than a boxy shape). Opt for classic (or with a hint of retro 70s) details rather than super trendy details so it will last you a lifetime and always look chic.
SHOPPING TIP 2: if the coat comes in other color options while shopping online, look at all of them. Sometimes you can see fit better in other colors or the way the fabric lays, if it’s flattering, etc. Also read reviews if there are any and check sizing for the perfect fit.
SHOPPING TIP 3: choose a style that most fits your own personal style… the one that calls to you, not the one everyone has.
SHOPPING TIP 4: shop for coats at the end of the winter season so you can get great deals and sales since stores are trying to clear out for spring and summer styles. Also, don’t forget to check vintage and thrift shops for great coats. Usually, the cleaning bill will be more than the coat itself, and either way, you’re saving money and the environment 🙂
I love that this coat works dressed up or down 🙂 It’s very versatile for the looks I like.
